People don’t actually ‘mumble’ any more today than they ever have done, so if mumbling didn’t bother you before and it does now, chances are it is a change in your hearing, and not how people are talking to you!
They’re mumbling? More like we’re mis-hearing!
Usually, its more of a case of mishearing on our part than it is on the person speaking. Mishearing occurs when our brain doesn’t have enough information to fully identify what is being said. In an attempt to help, we end up ‘filling in the missing pieces’, using a lifetime of experience and good old educated guesswork.
As a result, it's going to get it wrong some of the time. The more that’s missing, the more frequently we'll mishear.
Without help, a hearing loss will get gradually more noticeable to others you talk to; the misheard sentence or words that lead to any awkward or funny faux pas may be a sign you need to get your hearing checked.
Think: answering “Yes” or “No” to a question “What shall we do after that?”
