Hearing is incredibly important.
Staying present in the world, conversing with interesting people and maintaining any sort of social life. To lose it is to lose access to these things that enrich our life.
It allows us to communicate and interact with our world.
Be this family who visit, friends who we see occasionally or those we socialise with often.
As humans get more refined through the years, we naturally see a deterioration in the hearing; just one of the signs you’ve been living a good life!
As a result, slow changes occuring over years can accumulate and lead to a drop in our functional hearing.
This means that we’re not hearing quite as well as we once were and comes across like we’re not listening, getting bored easily or just plain lost in what the conversation is about.
Some people are incredibly good at making up for all this change too - quite often tactical use of a nod or shake of the head can convey a 'I’m listening, go on’, when actually the key message has been lost and they’re just hoping to catch up with the next sentence.
Background noise can be the absolute worst; greater complexity of talkers in noise that can mask or distract from the true thing or person you’re trying to listen to.
If you or a loved one needs a check of their functional hearing, book in a Discovery Consultation below and an Audiologist can assess things and let you know how things are. You may be suggested to get it checked in a few years, we may have caught the deterioration early, or you may be recommended to manage the hearing now rather than later.
One of the best ways of thinking about it is the idiom: ‘use it or lose it’
To reduce loss of function (i.e. the ability to hear well) after any neurological changes (e.g. a lack of input in hearing over the years), we must focus on promoting the brain’s own neuroplasticity to reshuffle the brain’s circuitry and restore compromised pathways.
Absolutely everyone’s brain has this ability. Yup, even yours.
The time is now for getting your hearing checked; I bet you’ve already seen to your eyes and teeth!

““Received new ‘ears’ on Wednesday. I cannot be happier. From the first contact they have been extremely helpful. Donald listened to my problems, carried out a full assessment and made recommendations. No pressure and an option to give them back if not completely satisfied. If hardware lives up to hopes, will be life-changing.”
